Disruption of production at OL2 plant unit

9.5.2018

Olkiluoto 2 plant unit (OL2) was disconnected from the national grid on Tuesday 8 May at 17:32 due to a disturbance in the external grid. OL2 will be restored to electricity production on 9 May 2018 after the necessary start-up measures have been completed.

- The plant unit was shut down automatically as a result of a disturbance in the external grid. The reason for the chain of events was a voltage transient which occurred across the country, and caused OL2 to be disconnected from the national grid. Efforts are taken to restore the plant unit to electricity production as soon as possible, says Marjo Mustonen, Senior Vice President, Electricity Production.

The reactor shut down automatically as a result of the event. The automatic shutdown is executed by the control rods being inserted in the reactor, shutting down the plant unit. All the systems operated as planned.

The event has no effect on nuclear safety.
