OL1 and OL2

The nuclear power plant units Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 (OL1 and OL2) plant units are identical: they are boiling water reactors. The current net electrical output of the plant units is 890 megawatts (MW). OL1 was first connected to the national grid in September 1978 and OL2 followed in February 1980.

The OL1 and OL2 plant units have been producing electricity for more than 45 years.

Their current net electrical output is 890 megawatts (MW) each. The annual production of each individual unit corresponds to approximately eight percent of Finland’s total electricity production.

We have continuously maintained our OL1 and OL2 plant units in excellent condition. A key role in this has been played by regular annual outages carried out according to the principle of continuous improvement, as well as modernization projects.

Plant modifications have also had a significant impact on electricity production. Originally rated at 660 MW, the units now generate electricity at a capacity of 890 MW.

Extension of operating lifetime

We are currently assessing the possibility of extending the operating lifetime by either 10 or 20 years, potentially up to 2058. At present, OL1 and OL2 have an operating license valid until 2038.
