Annual outages start at Olkiluoto NPP

23.4.2018

Annual outages have started at TVO’s nuclear power plant. The Olkiluoto 2 (OL2) plant unit was disconnected from electricity production on Sunday, 22 April, for a refuelling outage. The annual outage of Olkiluoto 1 (OL1) will start on Sunday, 13 May.

The estimated duration of the outage at OL2 is eleven days. In addition to refuelling, various maintenance activities, repairs and tests scheduled for execution once a year are to be carried out. According to plans, OL2 will be restored to electricity production on Thursday, 3 May.

The outage at OL1 is longer this year; a maintenance outage that will take about 33 days. Major works include replacement of the condenser, back pumping of bleed, and replacement of recirculation pumps. The annual outage at OL1 is planned to be completed by Friday, 15 June.

In addition to TVO's own personnel, this year up to 1500 employees of external contractors will take part in the annual outage works.

The refuelling and maintenance outages carried out at the plant units on alternating years are designed to ensure that a good level of production and operability is maintained at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant at all times.

- We especially emphasise safety issues, such as occupational health and safety, cleanliness and order. Top class professionals will once again see this challenging project through to the finishing line with a correct attitude and team spirit, says Marjo Mustonen, Senior Vice President, Electricity Production.

The OL1 and OL2 plant units play an important part in the base load production and implementation of the national energy and climate strategy in Finland. The plant units have been producing electricity for 40 years. Today, the electricity produced at the plant units accounts for about 16 percent of the Finnish electricity consumption and about 22 percent of the electricity produced in Finland.
