TVO audits uranium mine in Namibia

5.7.2016

TVO procures the fuel for the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant from suppliers who meet the strict requirements specified by the Company. For this reason, TVO continuously monitors and assesses suppliers included in the nuclear fuel procurement chain.

In June 2016, a team of experts in charge of the procurement of fuel and responsible procurement process travelled to Namibia to audit the Rössing uranium mine of Rio Tinto. The purpose of the supplier assessment is to monitor the systems the uranium supplier has in place for the management of quality, environment, and occupational health and safety, and how the systems are implemented in practice.

Rössing mine is one of the largest uranium mines in the world. The mine produced its first uranium concentrate on 15 June 1976. By way of a nice coincidence, the audit end meeting between the audit team and the mine management took place on 15 June 2016, which gave TVO the opportunity to congratulate the mine on its anniversary.

Procurement of fuel under own control

TVO procures fuel for the plant using a decentralised procurement chain, and conducts negotiations and concludes procurement agreements itself with suppliers at each phase of fuel production. There are several suppliers for each phase of the procurement chain and competitive bidding processes are arranged on a regular basis.

TVO has long-term agreements with the leading uranium suppliers of the industry. These companies engage in mining activities in several different countries. The largest uranium producing states include Kazakhstan, Canada and Australia. Most of the uranium used by TVO also comes from these countries.

The annual total consumption of fuel at TVO's nuclear power plant units OL1 and OL2 amounts to about forty tons of low-enriched uranium.

The visit of the TVO team to Namibia was an occasion acknowledged by the Finnish Ambassador, Ms. Anne Saloranta, who arranged a dinner at her residence with influential representatives of the Namibian mine industry on the guest list.
