A shared road to responsibility

At TVO, all work is carried out in accordance with the principle of continuous improvement.

We implement modernization projects and safety improvements to keep the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant up-to-date and safe. We also apply the principle of continuous improvement to everyday work and occupational well-being.

The Olkiluoto plant is currently undergoing several modifications that will further improve the plant’s capability to cope with unlikely severe accidents that may involve the simultaneous loss of operability of all safety systems.

In one of the associated projects, TVO will replace the eight original emergency diesel generators at its OL1 and OL2 plant units, as well as their auxiliary systems, by the end of 2022. Furthermore, TVO will procure a ninth generator. The construction of a new building that will house the new generator is currently underway. The contractor responsible for the project management is Skanska Talonrakennus Oy, TVO’s close cooperation partner in safety matters.

The cooperation for maintaining and developing responsible operations starts already in the contract tendering phase.
“We engage in cooperation with the contractors in many different ways and in various phases of the project. Examples of this include site meetings, TR observations, UPA assessments and site rounds,” says TVO’s occupational safety manager Sinikka Saarinen.

Skanska’s representatives are pleased to note that they share TVO’s view regarding the management of site-related safety matters.

“Our safety observation procedure is identical to TVO’s. The fact that we have recorded more than 40 observations since the beginning of August indicates that we have done a good job in adopting the procedures,” says Skanska’s production engineer Jarno Kujansuu.

Furthermore, both TVO and Skanska are committed to the zero accidents approach. The aim is to provide a responsible, safe and pleasant place to work for every employee.
