Nuclear power rises to third most popular form of energy production

11.12.2025

The Finnish Energy Industry Association (ET) published its latest energy attitude survey today. Nuclear power enjoys strong support among Finns, with 81 percent wanting either to increase its use or keep it at the current level. In last year’s survey, the corresponding figure was 78 percent.

While the share of those with a positive attitude has grown, the proportion of people opposed to new nuclear power has declined. Twelve percent would reduce the current amount, compared to 14 percent last year.

Solar and wind power maintained their positions as the most popular energy sources to expand, but nuclear power has now, for the first time, risen to third place, overtaking hydropower.

Energy self-sufficiency remains, in the view of citizens, the most important energy policy goal for Finland. This is followed by reasonable energy prices and mitigating climate change.

The energy attitude survey was commissioned by ET and conducted by Iro Research Oy, which interviewed more than a thousand Finns. The roots of this study run deep, as ET has been mapping Finns’ energy attitudes since 1983.
