The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) program for the possible extension of the operational lifespan and power increase of Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 plant units has been completed

9.1.2024

The EIA program was submitted to the coordinating authority, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment (TEM), today on January 5, 2024.

Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) is exploring the extension of the operational lifespan of the OL1 and OL2 plant units from 2038 to 2048 or 2058. Additionally, TVO is investigating the possibility of increasing the power output of the plant units. The consideration involves an 80 MW increase for both units, raising the power levels from 890 MW to approximately 970 MW. This would result in an additional electricity production of about 1.2 TWh per year.

As part of the assessment, TVO has prepared an assessment program in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Act. The environmental impact assessment examines the current state of the environment and assesses the environmental impacts of the project and their significance. Aspects evaluated in the EIA process include, among others, the effects on people and society, water bodies and fisheries, land use and landscape, soil and bedrock, groundwater, as well as vegetation, animals, and protected areas.

The program will be published on the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment's website, where it will be available for 60 days. During this period, anyone has the opportunity to provide their comments on the program. Additionally, the Ministry requests statements on the program from various authorities, communities, and municipalities in the impact area. After the consultation phase, all received statements will be compiled, and the Ministry will provide TVO with a statement based on them.

The program is also available on TVO's website, and it can be read in Finnish and Swedish, as well as in English. Summaries of the program have been published in eight languages.
