Veli-Pekka Nurmi, SVP of Safety and Security, returns to his roots – professionally and geographically
Veli-Pekka Nurmi, Senior Vice President of Safety and Security, joins TVO after a long career in the Safety Investigation Authority of Finland, an agency under the Ministry of Justice. He now brings his expertise to the TVO Group.

Born in Panelia, Nurmi started his career as a trainee at Paneliankosken Voima, where his family has been working for four generations already.
- My traineeship at Paneliankosken Voima inspired me to start studies in the field. I completed my Master of Science degree in Tampere and, after graduating, I got my first job at the Nuclear Engineering department at Imatran Voima.
After completing his military service, Nurmi moved to Pori to work at Porin Energialaitos – staying in the energy industry. In Tampere, Nurmi worked as the Managing Director for the municipal electricity company before moving on to government duties at the Safety Investigation Authority.- I transferred to TVO in early 2022. This closes the circle for me, as I am roughly where I started – both professionally and geographically, Nurmi says.
Nurmi’s extensive experience at the Safety Investigation Authority, which focuses on the reasons leading to severe accidents, gives him firm competence in the demanding safety culture of the nuclear industry.
- The best part about Olkiluoto is the large number of experts from different fields we have here. It’s like an orchestra: when everyone plays together, we sound good. An individual section is less important than the whole and the end result we achieve. To achieve the best results, we all need to have shared goals. We need everyone’s expertise and every “instrument” in our orchestra – as well as a conductor.
Music is part of Nurmi’s life in very concrete terms, as well. He started playing wind instruments at the age of 11.
- In my younger years, I played the bass and toured with a dance band. For example, I toured with Eija Kantola before she became famous, and I played the bass horn on Jussi Hakulinen’s album, in the song “Tähtipölyä”, Nurmi adds.
In the end, he found his career outside of music – which is good, as Teollisuuden Voima now has one more top safety professional to rely on.
- I want to do my part in supporting TVO as a workplace we can be proud of. I will do everything I can to preserve the level of safety culture that nuclear professionals working here have achieved through years of relentless work.
