The project concerning the security of water management at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant, launched by TVO in 2018, has progressed during the autumn of 2020 from general planning to the construction engineering stage. Eurajoki Municipal Council, for its part, showed the project a green light in its meeting on Tuesday, 24 November.

The construction project covers the construction of pipelines from Olkiluoto to the village of Lapijoki. The total length of the line is about 15 km. In addition to the pipelines, the project includes wastewater pumping stations, the construction of a raw water intake structure as well as modification works carried out on the plant site. The total value of the project is about 5.9 million euros.

The objective of the project is to secure the supply of raw water and the reliable operation of water management at the Olkiluoto nuclear facilities. After the completion of the project, wastewater is to be lead from Olkiluoto by the Eurajoki-Rauma transfer sewer to the Maanpää wastewater treatment plant in Rauma. The larger wastewater treatment unit makes more effective purification of wastewater possible and reduces the impact of wastewater on water bodies. TVO and the Municipality of Eurajoki shall agree on the various aspects of wastewater sewerage in the spring of 2021.

The pipelines run from Olkiluoto via the villages of Hankkila in Ilavainen, and Lapijoki to UPM's channel that starts from River Lapinjoki.

The application process for exploration permits will start in December 2020 and the intention is to reach agreements with land owners on the routing of the pipelines during the spring of 2021. The routing will be adjusted at the construction engineering stage based on ground studies and investigations carried out along the line. A hearing is planned to be held for the land owners on 10 December 2020 at 18:00 o'clock in the Eurajoki Hall.

The project engineering stage will be completed during 2021. Construction is scheduled to begin in the autumn of 2021, starting with the pipelines. The pumping stations and structures are scheduled for construction during 2022–2023. According to plans, the water management lines and structures will be in operation by the summer of 2023.
