Ulla-Maija Moisio appointed judge at European Nuclear Energy Tribunal
Ulla-Maija Moisio, Senior Vice President, Legal Affairs, at Teollisuuden Voima Oyj, has been appointed a judge at the European Nuclear Energy Tribunal for the 10th five-year term starting on 1 January 2020.

This appointment is exceptional, as according to the information available to us, there has never been a Finnish judge at the seven-judge tribunal, or anybody employed by a nuclear power operator.
Ms. Moisio, SVP of Legal Affairs at TVO since 2018, was taken by surprise last spring when the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment contacted her enquiring if she would be willing to become the Finnish candidate for a judge's position at the European Nuclear Energy Tribunal.
- Just to be asked to become a candidate was something absolutely amazing, let alone to be appointed a judge, Ms. Moisio, who is Master of Laws with court training, says with a smile.
The European Nuclear Energy Tribunal was established in 1957 by sixteen countries and operates under the auspices of OECD, ruling as the court of the highest instance over disputes related to nuclear accidents between countries that have joined international nuclear liability conventions, in cases where the dispute cannot be settled in the proceedings of the Steering Committee. Fortunately, the Tribunal has never yet had to be called upon. The position is one of trust in nature, and will not cause any changes in Ms. Moisio's work at TVO.
Ms. Moisio's appointment is exceptional in the sense that not only is she the first Finnish judge at the Tribunal, but also the first judge ever with a background in a nuclear power company in the history of the Tribunal.
- The appointment is a great honour to me and a token of acknowledgement to my work community, as well. It also provides an opportunity to create international networks to develop my own professional expertise, which will benefit the Finnish nuclear industry as a whole, Ulla-Maija Moisio, who has a passionate attitude towards work, explains her objectives for her term of office at the Tribunal.
