TVO expects Areva to provide a detailed plan to complete the remaining works in OL3 project

10.12.2013

Areva-Siemens Consortium who is building the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant unit under a fixed price turnkey contract has informed that it is planning to focus efforts on the OL3 site on urgent design tasks, which are the most critical to the project. In this context the plant supplier is planning to reduce the number of subcontractors and work staff on the construction site.

TVO's nuclear power plant in Olkiluoto achieved in 2012 the second best production result in its history. The plant units produced a total of 14.45 TWh (billion kilowatt-hours) of electricity and had a common capacity factor of 93.7%.

For Olkiluoto 2, the production volume in 2012 was the best ever, 7.48 TWh. At 96.9%, the capacity factor of OL2 was also a record for the unit. -The record production was based on a short annual outage, trouble-free operation of the plant unit and plant upgrades implemented during the annual outage, concludes Mikko Kosonen, the Senior Vice President for Production.

The production of Olkiluoto 1 amounted to 6.97 TWh in 2012. The generator breakdown in the spring, which also made it necessary to start the annual outages earlier than planned, is reflected in the lower production volume. Despite this, OL1 reached a good capacity factor of 90.4%.

Major work carried out at OL1 during the annual outage included e.g. replacement of the main generator, modification of the discharge side of low-pressure turbines, modernisation of the I&C of the condensate purification system, leak-tightness testing of the reactor containment and replacement of one auxiliary transformer. The duration of the annual outage at Olkiluoto 1 was a little over 31 days. After the completion of the annual outage, a brief repair outage had to be further carried out due to a faulty valve.

For OL2, the annual outage of 2012 was a brief refuelling outage, which in addition to refuelling consisted of mainly inspections and tests. The annual outage took a little over nine days at OL2. -All in all, the annual outages went well and the plant units are in good condition for another operating cycle. Owing to the plant upgrades implemented in 2010-2012, the safety of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant has been further improved and the net electric output of both units has increased by ca. 20 Megawatts as a result of the higher efficiency of the turbine plants, explains Mr. Kosonen.
