Teollisuuden Voima Oy has, as planned, started works at the future location of the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant unit. First contracts on forest cut, road works, soil and rock excavation have been signed.

As a preparation work for the new plant site, trees at an area of some 15 hectares have been cut. Furthermore, trees have been cut on an area of about 20 hectares, which will used as the storage area of  excavated rock and  earth, car parking and additional laydown area. UPM Forest has been responsible for cutting and transportation of trees.

Access roads to the new plant site will be constructed by Jalonen-Yhtiöt, domicile Rauma, Finland.  The required road works have already been started.

TVO signed the first civil work contract for the Olkiluoto 3 plant unit construction site with Maanrakennusliike E. Hartikainen Oy, domicile Joensuu, Finland, on 28 January 2004.  This work will start in the beginning of February and will continue until early June.  The contract includes excavation and levelling of the new power plant site area and other relating areas.  The total area to be excavated and levelled is about 400 000 square meters, soil excavation is about 400 000 cubic meters and rock excavation is about 180 000 cubic meters.

E. Hartikainen is an experienced contractor who has participated e.g. in the construction of the third runway of the Helsinki-Vantaa airport.
