The 2018 annual outages were completed on Midsummer's Day 23 June at 11:54 am with the outage of the Olkiluoto 1 plant unit. This year, extensive service outage was conducted at OL1, and it was OL2’s turn to undergo a refuelling outage. The annual outages took two months exactly.

Kollaasi_vuosihuollot_web.jpgThe most important work of the outage at the Olkiluoto 1 plant unit included the replacement of the main internals pumps and their frequency converters, renewal of turbine condensers, installation of new alternative coolant injection system, high-pressure drain forward pumping and the replacement of the high-pressure preheaters and feedwater distributors. The containment was also subjected to tightness tests. In addition to TVO’s own personnel, the work involved approximately 1,500 outside professionals.

The OL2 annual outage involved refuelling, annually repeated maintenance work and completion of the installation of new alternative coolant injection system The refuelling outage started on 23 April and took two weeks.

In total, the annual outages took 10 days longer as planned. The delays were caused by starting the replacement of the heat exchangers for the reactor water cleaning system later than planned, among other things. Otherwise, the annual outages went according to plan.

“The annual outages went well. This year, we invested in harmonised work methods and the tidiness and order of the worksites, in particular,” says Nina Paaso, OL1 and OL2 Plant Manager.

Over the years, the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant has been modernised through extensive modernisation projects during the alternating refuelling and service outages. The maintenance and replacement schedule specified for each component and piece of equipment is followed meticulously during the annual outage. Proper advance planning ensures the safe electricity production and availability of the plant units.
