OL3

The Olkiluoto 3 (OL3) plant unit is the third most powerful nuclear power unit in the world. It began regular electricity production in April 2023. Today, around 30 percent of Finland’s electricity comes from a single island, where the entire lifecycle of nuclear power is managed.

Did OL3 live up to its promises?

How did the completion of OL3 affect the average consumer’s electricity bill in Finland? And what impact has it had on Finland’s energy security or environmental goals? Youth Climate Delegate Antti Regelin looked into it – watch the video on YouTube! English subtitles are available – just turn them on in the video settings.

OL3 is a pressurized water reactor of the EPR type, with a net electrical output of approximately 1,600 megawatts (MW). It features modern technology based on proven systems, along with advanced new safety features. Special attention has been given to enhancing safety through measures such as the prevention and management of severe accidents, as well as to improving production efficiency and economic performance.

OL3 is the most powerful nuclear power unit in Europe.
