Pre-operational First start of diesel generator No. 9 in Olkiluoto on Friday
The largest modernisation project ever carried out in Olkiluoto made significant progress on Friday, 8 May, when the operation of diesel generator No. 9 was tested for the first time.
The exact start time of EDG (Emergency Diesel Generator) No. 9 was at 9:03 in the morning. EDG No. 9 is the first of the diesel generator delivery from Wärtsilä Finland Oy within the EDG project in which 9 EDG's will be renewed for OL1 and OL2 one at a time.
EDG No. 9 is actually not just an emergency diesel, but a separate, independent power plant which will make it possible to replace, during power operation, the four original emergency diesel generators one at a time at each plant, included with their auxiliary systems.
The EDG project is the largest modernisation project in the history of the two operating plant units of TVO. Within this project TVO has constructed four new buildings, among other things. One of them is dedicated for diesel No. 9, two are additional new buildings to the auxiliary nuclear buildings of OL1 and OL2 and the fourth houses a supply connection between the plant units. EDG unit No. 9 (diesel engine, generator and a shared bed plate) were delivered to Olkiluoto in November 2018.
The specifications of the EDG unit:
- Engine type is 6L32, i.e., it is an in-line engine with six cylinders and a piston diameter of 32 cm.
- 750 RPM
- The total weight of the EDG unit is 68 300 kg.
