Olkiluoto nuclear power plant had a very good production year in 2015

5.1.2016

TVO's nuclear power plant in Olkiluoto had a very good production year in 2015. Olkiluoto 1 achieved the second best production result 7.40 TWh (billion kilowatt-hours). The combined production of Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 in 2015 was 14.26 TWh of electricity. The combined load factor of the plant units was 92.7 percent.

The production of Olkiluoto 2 was decreased by a generator failure in February. However, the combined production of both plant units in 2015 was the 8th largest in the whole 36-year history in Olkiluoto. The production of OL2 was 6.86 TWh.

The load factor of Olkiluoto 1 was 96.2 percent and the load factor of Olkiluoto 2 was 89.2 percent.

- Thanks to the modernization projects carried out in 2010–2012, the plant units operated efficiently. In addition to the generator failure in OL2 we had hardly any production disruptions. The annual outages proceeded also well and quickly, Mikko Kosonen, Senior Vice President, Production says.

The wind power plant in Olkiluoto produced 0.0014 TWh of electricity and had a load factor of 16.2 percent. The figures were the 8th best in the history of the plant.

The Olkiluoto nuclear power plant is maintained according to the principle of continuous improvement with replacement and modernization of plant technology carried out on a continuous basis. At present, plant modifications are being planned and implemented to prepare the plant units for the renewal of the operating license in 2018.

Modifications in pipeline will further improve the plant's ability to survive events caused by exceptional natural phenomena possibly involving simultaneous loss of several safety systems.
