18.8.2014

The public hearing event organised on 14 August by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy regarding TVO's supplementary application for the OL4 project and Posiva's supplementary application for the final disposal of spent fuel offered people an opportunity to voice their opinions and obtain information about the projects.

The event arranged in the Eurajoki municipal office building attracted more than thirty attendees. In addition to the representatives of the Ministry, the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), TVO and Posiva, about twenty active citizens were also present.

TVO and Posiva submitted the supplementary applications to the Ministry of Employment and the Economy on 20 May 2014. The Ministry then gave a public notice on 18 June requesting statements on the applications. At the same time, overview presentations of the construction of the Olkiluoto 4 nuclear power plant unit and of the final disposal of the spent fuel from the unit in Olkiluoto were sent to every household in Eurajoki and the nearby municipalities.

In the public event, Industrial Councillor Herkko Plit gave a general presentation of the supplementary applications of TVO and Posiva. Mr. Tapani Virolainen and Mr. Jussi Heinonen from the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority told the audience about the grounds on which STUK's safety assessments of the OL4 plant unit and the associated final disposal solution are based, and about the posting of the safety assessments of the projects on STUK's website on 18 August 2014. The event was chaired by Special Advisor Jaana Avolahti from the Ministry and Special Advisor Pia Nordberg, also from the Ministry, acted as the Secretary of the event.

A few addresses gave in the hearing event

Kimmo Nurminen, who represents Paneliankosken Voima, gave an address emphasising the need to secure Finnish energy economy also in the future. A question was also made from the audience about the energy consumption forecasts, in terms of a reduction in electricity consumption, utilised in the preparation of the decision-in-principle. Mr. Plit replied that the electricity market scenarios have been updated and there have been no significant changes in the forecast. Kimmo Nurminen requested the floor again, and reminded that almost all measures that reduce energy consumption result in an increase in electricity consumption.

The representatives of the Ministry recorded the addresses gave in the event. Copies of the applications for the supplementing of the decision-in-principle are posted for public display during office hours between 16 June and 15 August 2014 in Eurajoki, Eura, Luvia, Nakkila and Rauma. The deadline for submitting statements is 15 August 15.8.2014. Instructions for the submittal of written statements can be found in e.g. the previously given public notice as well as on the website of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy at www.tem.fi.
