TVO awards significant contract for replacement of main circulation pumps

14.8.2014

TVO has already for years carried out modernisation projects at the existing plant units and this work is now continued. In July, a contract was awarded to Westinghouse Electric Sweden (WSE) for the replacement of the main circulation pumps at Olkiluoto 1 and 2. The contract covers 12 main circulation pumps with a total value of more than 40 MEUR.

The replacement of the main circulation pumps at Olkiluoto 1 and 2 takes place under a turn-key contract awarded to WSE, who is responsible for the erection of the delivery and for the manufacture of special tools, as well as for the design and engineering of the pumps in collaboration with their manufacturer (KSB Group). TVO's scope of the delivery covers the provision of the supporting services specified in the contract during the erection period.

- The replacement of the main circulation pumps is one of the most significant modernisation projects in TVO's history. The current pumps have been in operation for 35 years, and the replacement of the pumps will for its part ensure the continued reliable and safe operation of the plant units, explains TVO's Sami Jakonen, Senior Vice President, Engineering.

The main circulation pumps pump water through the reactor core. The new pumps produce a greater flow that the current pumps.

The main circulation pumps will be replaced during the annual outages of 2016–2018. At first, one new pump will be erected at OL1 and operational tests will be carried out with it. All the six pumps of OL2 will then be replaced in 2017, followed finally by the replacement of the remaining old pumps at OL1.
