Annual outages are starting in Olkiluoto

30.4.2015

The annual outages at Teollisuuden Voima's (TVO) nuclear power plant in Olkiluoto will start on Sunday 3 May with disconnection of Olkiluoto 1 from the national grid. The service outage of Olkiluoto 2 is estimated to start on Sunday 17 May.

This year OL1 will have a refueling outage expected to take nine days. In addition to refueling, some maintenance and repair operations as well as testing will be done. Moreover, a mixing unit in the feedwater line will be replaced. OL1 is scheduled to be back in electricity generation on 12 May.

OL2 will undergo a longer service outage which is expected to take approximately 15 days. The major activities to be carried out, apart from refueling, include low-voltage equipment replacement in two subsystems and renewal of both feedwater mixing units. According to the preliminary plan, the outage will be completed on 1 June.

In addition to TVO's own personnel, up to 800 subcontractors will be involved in the annual outages.

As good as new

The refueling and service outages carried out in alternate years at the plant units ensure that Olkiluoto nuclear power plant is kept in excellent condition at all times.

The annual outages are executed on the basis of maintenance and replacement programs specified in detail for each device and component. Good advance planning is utilized to prevent failures in equipment and components important to safety or production. TVO also implements extensive modernization projects at the plant units about every five years.
