The exhibition to be opened in December will provide information of the research currently being conducted in ONKALO to confirm that the Olkiluoto bedrock is suitable for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. Visitors will be able to learn about the release barriers used in final disposal and to test their own abilities in the complex world of research into final disposal. Final disposal equipment and machines as well as the future construction effort in the repository will also be introduced to the public.

In the VLJ repository research section, located 60 metres below ground level, visitors will get a conception of the scale of the final disposal effort by taking a look at the research related to tunnel excavation and disposal holes. Before the construction of ONKALO, three disposal holes had been bored in the facility for research purposes, and a few metres of deposition tunnel excavated. At the moment, a joint concrete durability research project of TVO and Fortum is being carried out in the facility.

The exhibition is open for groups visiting Olkiluoto on a pre-booked guided tour. The guided tour includes a welcoming coffee, company presentation, a visit to the Electricity from Uranium science exhibition and a visit to the VLJ repository. The complete tour takes approximately three hours.
