Another excellent production year in Olkiluoto

2.1.2015

TVO's nuclear power plant in Olkiluoto achieved excellent production figures again in 2014. For the second year in row, the production result of 14.76 TWh (billion kilowatt-hours of electricity) was the best ever in the history of the power plant. The combined load factor of the plant units was 96.0 percent.

The excellent production figures in 2014 are based on the exceptionally small number of production disruptions. Annual outages also proceeded in a smoother manner than in previous years. At 14.76 TWh, the total production of the plant units tops the previous record of 14.63 TWh from the year 2013 by almost 130,000 MWh, which equals three and a half day combined production of both Olkiluoto plant units.

The 7.50 TWh produced at Olkiluoto 2 in 2014 is the highest production figure ever achieved at either plant unit. Olkiluoto 2 exceeded its own previous record from the year 2012 by ca. 20,000 MWh. For Olkiluoto 1, the 2014 production of 7.27 TWh is the 7th best in the history of the plant unit.

In terms of the load factor, Olkiluoto 2 with 97.4 % boasts the highest factor ever for the plant unit. The load factor of Olkiluoto 1 was 94.5 % giving the plant units a combined load factor of 96.0 %.

- The excellent production figures were possible, because the results of the modernisation projects carried out at the plant units in 2010–2012 are now becoming visible. Olkiluoto power plant is in excellent condition and we have had hardly any production disruptions. The annual outages were also completed successfully and quickly, explains Mr. Mikko Kosonen, Senior Vice President, Production.

Olkiluoto nuclear power plant is maintained according to the principle of continuous improvement with replacement and modernisation of plant technology carried out on a continual basis. At present, plant modifications are being planned and implemented to prepare the plant units for the renewal of the operating licence in 2018. Modifications in pipeline will further improve the plant's ability to survive events caused by exceptional natural phenomena possibly involving simultaneous loss of several safety systems.
