Summer visitors and events in Olkiluoto

2.7.2014

For TVO, the summer in Olkiluoto was filled with visitors of all ages. The nature trail running near the Visitor Centre was opened in June; in July, the permanent and summer residents of the nearby area were invited for an afternoon of various activities and performances, and special Summer Wednesday visits were organised to the power plant. TVO also arranged three science camps where children of lower comprehensive school age were given an introduction to the world of science.

Sea creatures and nature observations

The opening event called Power From Nature attracted a good one hundred visitors. The various sea creatures displayed in an aquarium proved to be the most interesting offering of the event. The children who participated in the event were particularly interested in the crab, sturgeons, perch and whitefish raised in Olkiluoto. The viewers found the sturgeons quite funny with their peculiar, oblong form and a moustache. The children also had an opportunity to engage in stone painting where they could make a paper weight of their own design using natural stones. The older visitors, on the other hand, were given a lesson in how to correctly clean fish as well as tips and recipes with summer flavours.

There are along the nature trail boards that provide information about the birds, plants and animals found in the area, as well as about environmental monitoring, bedrock and drilling operations. The trail is about one kilometre long and runs along the seashore and the boundary of the Natura area.

Fire safety focal theme in the event for residents of the near area

On Friday 5 July, residents from the area near the power plant assembled in the Visitor Centre in Olkiluoto to hear current news from TVO. Apart from information, the almost 300 visitors were given a presentation of the firefighting equipment in Olkiluoto as well as guidance regarding fire safety at home and in the summer cabin. They could bowl with water fire extinguishers, visit the exhibition in the Visitor Centre and learn about the nature on the Island by walking the nature trail running round the Visitor Centre.

Extinguishing shows attracted an enthusiastic audience to watch at close range how to act in case of a fire. Those who wanted to have a go themselves were taught how to put out a fire with an extinguishing blanket and a water extinguisher.

The children painted stones into ladybirds and colourful works of art, which they could take home with them. Imagination was the only limitation. The children also had the opportunity to try on the equipment of the firefighters and to have souvenir photos taken of themselves.

Science camps and Summer Wednesdays popular

For already the tenth summer, TVO arranged in June and August science camps, where more than 60 children of lower comprehensive school age were given an introduction to the world of science. The instructors at the five-day day-time camps were two university students that TVO employed for the summer.

Summer Wednesdays proved particularly popular this summer, with almost 450 participants in the guided tours organised every Wednesday in July. After a welcome coffee, the programme included a presentation of TVO’s operations, a video show and a guided bus tour of the power plant site.
