Potentially damaged fuel to be removed from Olkiluoto 1 plant unit’s reactor

12.10.2017

Indications of potentially damaged fuel have been detected at OL1 and as a result of this, the power level of the plant unit will be reduced to 70 percent on Wednesday, 18 October. The reduction of power level will start at 5:00 in the morning.

At 16:00 in the afternoon of the same day, measures will be started to bring the plant unit to a cold shutdown from the 70 percent power level. The plant unit will be disconnected from electricity generation at 18:00.

After the cold shutdown, electricity generation at the plant unit is estimated to continue on Thursday, 26 October 2017 at 21:00.

Radioactive substances are released to some extent from the damaged fuel into reactor water, but this does not cause any risk to the environment.
