Nuclear industry uses peer reviews to ensure the use of best practices

The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) is conducting a peer review in Olkiluoto. Experts of the nuclear industry from other nuclear power plants around the world are reviewing TVO's operation.

The peer review coincides with a visit to Olkiluoto by the Chairman of WANO, Mr. Jacques Regaldo, the CEO of Wano, Mr. Peter Prozesky and Governor of WANO Paris Centre, M. Bertrand de L'Epinois. The tour at the OL3 EPR was hosted by M. Jean-Pierre Mouroux, Project Manager for Areva. Mr. Mikko Kosonen and Mr. Mikko Niemi represented TVO during the visit.
- Peer reviews summarise the significance of the work carried out by WANO. In terms of safety, peer reviews are our most important work method, says Mr. Bertrand de L'Epinois, Governor of WANO's Paris Centre.

A peer review is conducted every four years. The purpose of the review is to help nuclear power companies take advantage of the best practices of the field. The previous review was carried out in Olkiluoto in 2012. The implementation of the action proposals based on the review is monitored at regular intervals.

- Nuclear power is produced in Olkiluoto with excellent professional expertise. The operation and modernisation of the two existing plant units as well as Olkiluoto 3, which represents advanced nuclear power technology, are testimony to this, concludes Mr. L'Epinois.

Cooperation extends also to commissioning of Olkiluoto 3 EPR

WANO is also involved at the commissioning stage of Olkiluoto 3, when a so-called pre-start up peer review is carried out. This review focuses on TVO's readiness to start the operation of the plant unit. After the commissioning stage, the OL3 plant unit will be included in the regular peer reviews conducted at intervals of 4 years.

All the countries that produce nuclear power, and all the nuclear power companies operating in these countries, are members of WANO. The organisation has been set up to verify the safe operation of nuclear power plants across the world, and at the same time to goad the plants on to improve their operation.

The focal areas of the ongoing peer review at TVO include leadership, administration, supervision, support functions, human resources and communication. The peer review is conducted by 31 reviewers, who come from 11 different countries.
