TVO signs new energy-efficiency agreement

24.10.2016

Today, TVO joined the energy-efficiency agreement between the Finnish state and industry federations, and pledged to comply with its energy production action plan, which aims to implement efficiency measures for energy use as well as improve the efficiency of primary energy use and the total efficiency of energy production.

“TVO’s target for the new period, years 2017–2025, is 150 GWh in total, and the necessary changes in efficiency will be implemented during the annual outages of 2017 and 2018. TVO’s energy-efficiency target is equivalent to the average annual consumption of approximately 7,500 detached houses with electric heating,” says President and CEO Jarmo Tanhua.

TVO is the most significant producer of emission-free electricity in Finland, and the completion of OL3 will increase TVO’s role as a producer of clean electricity into almost one-third of all the electricity used in Finland. By producing climate-friendly electricity, TVO makes a significant contribution to the shared climate work and ensures, for its part, achievement of the targets set for Finland.

Previous agreement period’s efficiency target achieved ahead of schedule

For several years, TVO has participated in a voluntary energy-efficiency agreement as a part of Finnish industry. The efficiency target of 340 GWh for the previous energy-efficiency agreement period, years 2008–2016, was already successfully achieved by the end of 2011. The amount is equivalent to the average annual consumption of approximately 17,000 detached houses with electric heating.

The plant units have been developed in a systematic and methodical way. The principle is to maintain the plant units as good as new, and solutions that represent cutting-edge technology and improve usability, productivity and safety are introduced throughout the plant’s entire service life. There are currently plant changes being planned and implemented in preparation for the renewal of the plant units’ operating licence in 2018. Over the years, the nominal output of the plant units has been raised from the original 660 MW to the current nominal output of 880 MW. “As a result of the modernisation work, the electrical output power of the plant units has increased thanks to improved energy efficiency. That is why some of the modernisation projects have also been classified as environmental projects. The waste heat from the plant units is utilised as district heating for the buildings in the area,” says Tanhua.

As TVO continues it participation in the agreement and joins the new agreement period, TVO helps curb climate change, because efficient use of energy reduces emissions and is also cost-efficient. In accordance with the principle of continuous improvement, the TVO group aims to keep implementing measures connected to energy efficiency as a part of normal activities.

Good turnout for Energy Saving Week events at Olkiluoto

The national Energy Saving Week held in the TVO group highlighted the sensible use of energy and materials and consequently reducing CO2 emissions and the environmental impact of operations. “We all have many ways to make energy consumption more efficient and achieve savings at workplaces, schools, traffic and home,” says Environmental Specialist Merja Levy.

Participation in the Energy Saving Week has become a part of TVO’s environmental programme and energy-efficiency enhancement programme. “This week’s themes included a day without biowaste, smart commuting by car pooling, by bus or by bike, and the recycling of office supplies and furniture. The master of efficiency of Olkiluoto was sought through activities connected to energy and material-efficiency: pedalling an electric bike and sorting waste. Experts from Rauman Energia lectured on solar power to Olkiluoto personnel. Throughout the week, personnel were also encouraged to work remotely for a day,” says Levy.
