Nuclear power for environmental reasons

TVO listens keenly to all the stakeholders of the Company and engages in continuous interaction with them.
In the survey executed towards the end of 2015, 78 percent of decision-makers considered nuclear power to offer an environmentally benign method for electricity production. As many as 80 percent of them were of the view that we cannot achieve the climate targets specified for Finland without nuclear power. Both figures showed an increase of 10 percent units over the previous survey conducted in 2013.
The stakeholder survey was designed to collect feedback on TVO's activities by gauging the attitudes of politicians, media, authorities and non-profit organisations towards energy, as well as their trust in TVO. According to the respondents, TVO has improved its profile in terms of responsibility and transparency. TVO was considered a responsible nuclear power company by 93 percent of the respondents, which is 12 percent units more than in the previous survey. The share of respondents who estimate TVO to communicate openly about its activities was 62 percent, showing an increase of 6 percent units over the previous survey.
Awareness of TVO's operation has also improved further with all stakeholder groups estimating the Company's reputation to be on an excellent level. As many as 87 percent of the respondents were of the opinion that TVO plays an important role in the Finnish society. The percentage had increased by 6 percent units from the 2013 survey. TVO's actions were found reliable by 86 percent of the respondents.
Competitiveness has become a new concern
While less concern is expressed about the safety of nuclear power and final disposal of spent fuel, the competitiveness of nuclear power has become a new source of concern.
Apart from reliability and responsibility, the strengths attributed to TVO include top class quality and environmental benignity, as well as the fact that TVO is a Finnish company.
