CLIMATE-FRIENDLY ELECTRICITY

As a form of electricity production that is free from carbon dioxide, nuclear power plays an important part in the mitigation of climate change.

Nuclear electricity is during its entire lifecycle an as environmentally friendly electricity production method in terms of greenhouse gas emissions as wind power, hydropower and solar power. The use of bioenergy does not add to the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere either. Without the use of nuclear power, annual carbon dioxide emissions would be 20 million tons higher in Finland at present.

The mitigation of climate change is one of the key challenges facing the humankind. Energy production and consumption cause about 80% of all greenhouse emissions in Finland. In recent years, carbon dioxide emissions from electricity production have amounted to 5-10 million tons. The key weapons in the mitigation of emissions related to energy include the improvement of energy efficiency and focusing on low-emission and emission-free energy forms, such as renewable energy sources and nuclear power.

TVO participates in the Energy Efficiency Agreement Scheme, and complies with the associated Action Plan for Energy Production that describes the implementation of actions designed to make the use of energy more efficient and to improve the efficiency of primary energy use as well as the total efficiency of energy production.

Nuclear power in front line in fight against climate change

In its publication World Energy Outlook 2017, the International Energy Agency (IEA) stated that the share of fossil fuels in the world's energy consumption remains high in 81 percent. In the future, the role of low-carbon energy such as renewable energy or nuclear power will be crucial. The share of nuclear power should double. According to the IEA, the increase of the electricity use in the world will be rapid, over 60 percent by 2040.
