The 565 MW Meri-Pori coal-fired power plant, owned and operated by
Fortum Power and Heat Oy, is located on the Tahkoluoto island in Pori.
TVO has a 45% holding in the plant.
The Meri-Pori plant was commissioned in 1994. The plant has state-of-the-art environmental technology, including catalytic nitrogen gas purifiers and modern incineration technology that remove 80% of the nitrogen oxides from the flue gases, as well as a sulfur scrubber that removes approximately 90% of the sulfur dioxide, and dust filters that remove nearly 100% of the particles in the flue gas.
The ash and the gypsum created in the incinerator and the sulfur scrubber are used in landscaping and the building industry. When the ash and gypsum are stored, close attention is paid to the need to protect surface and groundwater and to reduce the harmful effects of dust and the impact on the landscape.
The amount of electricity needed by TVO’s shareholders determines how much of TVO’s share of the Meri-Pori plant is being used at any time.
