OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY INDICATORS

Three accidents resulting in absence from work occurred during the year to TVO's own personnel, giving an accident frequency rate of 2.2 accidents per one million working hours.

The accidents caused 13 days of lost working time. Five commuting accidents caused absence from work. All accidents that led to absences have been investigated and corrective measures have been defined for them to prevent recurrence of similar situations.

A total of 13 accidents resulting in absence from work occurred to TVO’s contractors in Olkiluoto, the accident frequency rate being 9.5 (in 2016: 6.9) accidents per one million working hours. The number of absence days resulting from the accidents of the contractors was 216 (2016: 54).

The combined accident frequency in Olkiluoto was 6.0. This figure includes TVO personnel, Posiva personnel and all contractors active in Olkiluoto, with the exception of the OL3 site which is reported by the AREVA-Siemens Consortium.

On the OL3 construction site, 9 accidents resulting in absence from work took place during the year, giving an accident frequency rate of 1.7 (2016: 1.0). The total number of absence days resulting from accidents that occurred on the OL3 construction site was 77 (2016: 94).

Thorough investigations and guidelines prevent future accidents

Reporting of observed incidents assists in the prevention of accidents. The investigation of incidents as well as corrective actions are means used to prevent the recurrence of similar events in the future. The most common accident types in Olkiluoto in 2017 were slipping, tripping, as well hand bruises and cuts.

The occupational health and safety organisation initiates accident investigations which are carried out in cooperation with the line organisation. The investigation reports are submitted to the line management. They review the reports in their own organisations and monitor the progress of corrective actions.

The safety level of ongoing worksites is monitored by means of weekly TR measurement rounds (assessment of working conditions). The occupational safety indicators for the OL3 construction site are currently clearly lower than on construction sites on average.
