880 MW boiling water reactors OL1 and OL2

The two nuclear power plant units operated by TVO, Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 (OL1 and OL2), are identical boiling water reactor power plant units. A net electrical output of Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2  is 880 MW.

The units were supplied by the Swedish company AB Asea Atom (now Westinghouse Electric Sweden AB). OL1 was first connected to the national grid in September 1978 and the OL2 unit in February 1980.

In 2010, the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant generated about 14 TWh of electricity, which amounts to 16% of all the electricity consumed in Finland.

TVO keeps the OL1 and OL2 units running as good as new through carefully planned long-term maintenance. The units are also systematically upgraded to conform to today´s demands. Maintenance and modernization is undertaken during the annual outage in May-June. Also, both units are subjected to longer, more extensive maintenance outages for implementing major changes.
