  • Start-up of Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant may be postponed further

Based on the latest progress report submitted by the plant supplier, AREVA-Siemens, TVO now estimates that the start-up of the plant may be postponed beyond June 2012 which is the current schedule confirmed by the supplier. The turn-key plant supplier is responsible for the time schedule and therefore TVO has now requested a re-analysis of the anticipated start-up date.

"Olkiluoto 3 is a huge project. Thousands of people have been working hard in construction activities here at the site, and we have recently met important milestones. However, the reactor plant civil construction works are taking longer than previously estimated and the pace of completion continues to be slower than planned. These accumulating delays are now impacting the start of the installation and erection works", stated Project Director Jouni Silvennoinen when explaining the reasons for the possible additional delay. "Additionally, there continues to be delay in the development of the I&C system and this may become critical for the plant time schedule."

TVO continues to cooperate with the supplier to support efficient and smooth progress of component installation and preparations for plant commissioning. "At the same time, we will not permit any compromise of safety or quality requirements; the plant will be safe and technically advanced", Silvennoinen concludes.

During 2009 the reactor building of Olkiluoto 3 has achieved the roof level and the manufacture of several main components has been completed. Erection of main turbine components has been completed and the civil construction works and erection works at the reactor building continue. Currently the workforce on site is about 4100.
