  • Why more nuclear power?

The Olkiluoto 4 unit is needed to cover a notable portion of Finland's electricity production deficit with emission-free and competitive production. OL4 will significantly decrease Finland's dependence on imported electricity. With additional nuclear capacity, the electricity supply for business and individual consumers will be secured.

    TVO has solid nuclear experience

TVO has 30 years of experience in safe construction and operation of nuclear power. Throughout the OL3-project, the company has employed many new skilled employees.

    An excellent location for OL4

Olkiluoto is an ideally suited site for building additional nuclear power. Olkiluoto is a versatile energy supply site. Early on in developing its infrastructure, the possibilities for future plant units have been taken into account. The area has complete road, electricity, water, and waste management systems. Furthermore, there is a new gas turbine plant, maintenance and warehouse facilities, accommodation village, and visitor center.

    Environmental Impact Assessment complete

Already in the early 1970's, thorough routine environmental monitoring was begun, and has provided a solid base and benchmark for environmental assessment today. Decades of regular monitoring has also helped in the assessment of the combined environmental impacts of the fourth unit and the other functions at the Olkiluoto energy supply site.

    Complete nuclear waste management arrangements

Nuclear waste management facilities are an essential part of the Olkiluoto energy supply site. The facilities are comprised of a low and medium-level waste repository and an interim storage for spent nuclear fuel. TVO and Fortum Power and Heat Oy's co-owned Posiva Oy's construction project of a final disposal facility is currently at the research and development stage.
Final disposal of spent nuclear fuel into the Olkiluoto bedrock will start 2020.

    Eurajoki citizens support the project

Local community support for TVO's operations and the Olkiluoto project is indispensable to TVO. The majority of citizens in the neighborhood accept the construction of the OL4-unit.
