Plant type alternatives
TVO's Decision-in-Principle application is for a nuclear power plant unit using either a boiling water or pressurized water type light water reactor. All of the nuclear power plants currently operating in Finland use light water reactors.
TVO has conducted extensive research and has several plant alternatives available that represent modern technology and fulfill strict Finnish nuclear safety regulations.
TVO has solid competence on new plant alternatives, experience in construction and skilled organisation for the construction project.

In a boiling water reactor plant water is circulated through fuel assemblies in reactor core, which causes the water to heat up and boil. The steam is led through steam separators and steam dryers in the reactor pressure vessel into a high pressure turbine, an intermediate steam superheater and a low pressure turbine. The turbines are attached through an axle to a generator which produces electricity.
