Olkiluoto 3 into Commercial Operation in 2010
The delay at the Olkiluoto 3 construction site has not diminished during the last months. The Supplier (Consortium AREVA-Siemens) has now reported to TVO, the Owner, that the plant unit according to his forecast will be ready to be taken into commercial operation during the second quarter of year 2010. Based on this, the first electricity will be produced at the end of 2009.
- TVO is not satisfied with the time schedule situation and works hard together with the Supplier to improve the situation. However, independent of the time schedule situation, both TVO and the Supplier remain fully committed to fulfill strictly the Finnish safety, quality or reliability requirements, states the TVO's Project Director Mr Martin Landtman.
According to Mr Landtman, there are several key reasons for the delay. - Generation, review and approval of detailed design, manufacturing and construction solutions have taken more time than expected. The schedule has also been impacted by the fact that such an intensive and demanding project has not been carried out for many years. - It has taken quite some time for the related industry to reach the enhanced performance level required for the new generation of nuclear power plants, continues Mr Martin Landtman.
Operation of the concrete batching plant at the OL3 site was stopped for about eight weeks early 2006 due to slightly too high water content in certain concrete batches. Also this caused a few months' delay in the schedule. The reasons for the deviations have been identified and measures have been taken to ensure good quality production in the future.
- The Supplier has confirmed his commitment to look for acceleration of the remaining works. However, the effect of such accelerating measures can be verified only as civil and manufacturing works proceed, says Mr Martin Landtman.
