    Worldwide cooperation

The basic task of WANO is to maximise the safety and reliability of the operation of nuclear power plants. The organisation is active among its members.

Membership of WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators) is voluntary, but all nuclear power operators in the world have joined.

The WANO Regional Centres are located in Paris, Moscow, Tokyo and Atlanta and are coordinated by the Coordinating Centre in London.

TVO is a member of the WANO Paris Centre, while the Fortum nuclear power plant in Loviisa is a member of the Moscow Centre. Memberships are based to the reactor types. Members benefit from the membership of other operators with similar power plants.

    Focus on safety and reliability

The decision to set up WANO was taken after the Chernobyl accident. The principal task of the organisation is to maximise the safety and reliability of the operation of nuclear power plants by exchanging information and encouraging communication, comparison and emulation amongst its members. This is the mission of WANO.

The WANO Regional Centres follow four main programmes, although there are differences in emphasis between them. The programmes are:
    • Operating Experience
    • Peer Review
    • Professional and Technical Development
    • Technical Support and Exchange.

WANO has two websites, one for members at http://www.wano.org and one for the general public at www.wano.org.uk. Access to the member website is by user ID and password only.
