Meri-Pori coal-fired power plant
The 565 MW Meri-Pori coal-fired power plant, which is owned and operated by Fortum Power and Heat Oy, produces electricity at Tahkoluoto in Pori. TVO has a 45% holding in the plant, which is the biggest unit of its kind in Finland.
The plant started production in 1994. It environmental engineering systems are state-of-the-art. The catalytic nitrogen gas purifiers and modern incineration technology remove 80% of the nitrogen oxides from the flue gases, the sulphur scrubber removes 85% to 90% of the sulphur dioxide, and dust filters remove 99.9% of the particles. The ash and the gypsum created in the sulphur scrubber are used by the building industry, and when they are stored, close attention is paid to the need to protect surface and ground water and to reducing the harmful effects of dust and impact on the landscape.
The amount of electricity needed by TVO´s shareholders determines how much of TVO´s share of the Meri-Pori plant is being used at any time.
