TVO produces about one sixth of all the electricity consumed in Finland. About half of the TVO output goes to households, the service sector and agriculture, the other half going to industry. Electricity produced at a competitive price in Finland keeps society moving, generating competitiveness for Finnish business and employment and wellbeing to Finns. Energy is a vital raw material for many industrial sectors.

In 2006, the total consumption of electricity in Finland was 90.3 TWh, of which TVO produced 15.7 TWh. TVO has been providing Finnish society with electricity since the late 1970s, to a total of 338 TWh. This is roughly equal to the consumption of electricity in Finland for the entire period from the first introduction of electricity up to the 1970s.

Life in Finland is increasingly dependent on electricity; its consumption has grown constantly and is expected to continue to grow at a rate of more than one per cent per annum. The increased consumption of electricity by households is due among other things to an increasing amount of living space per person, an increase in the number and equipment of leisure dwellings, and the increased use of electronics. There are many functions in the service sector aiming at improving wellbeing, and electricity consumption in the service sector is expected to increase considerably in the near future, by about one third by 2020.
