Environmental performance

TVO environmental performance involves responsibility for the nuclear power process, the natural environment and people. TVO produces electricity with minimum impact on the environment. Environmental factors are of crucial importance in TVO´s aim of continuous improvement. The state of the environment is monitored among others by the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) and the Southwest Finland Regional Environment Centre. Their measurements have found no significant changes in the natural environment at Olkiluoto or in its vicinity.

TVO environmental policy is based on responsibility for the environment in keeping with sustainable development, the principle of continuous improvement, and a lifecycle approach to the management of the power plant units. TVO requires companies and partners operating at the power plant site to take responsibility similarly for environmental matters and to conform to TVO policies and principles.

TVO has an environmental management system certified under the international ISO 14001 standard. The Olkiluoto power plant has EMAS registration, provided for by EU Regulation and granted by the Finnish Environment Institute.
