Mysterious caches in Olkiluoto

4.7.2014

From now on, all those who enjoy the great outdoor as well as coordinates can go to the Island of Olkiluoto to engage in their favourite activity. It is no treasure island, however, even if hunters of small plastic containers may become a common sight in the area.

A geocache was hidden in the area of the Visitor Centre in Olkiluoto at the end of June. The cache is a classic geocache; these are the most common type of geocaches, and in terms of numbers also the most popular. The plastic cache container, which is about one litre in size, holds a logbook where the geocachers can log their find.

The geocache can be found on the basis of its coordinates and the Finnish children's song about ants, which is given as a clue. The Olkiluoto nuclear power plant units are visible to the cache location. The coordinates for the cache are listed on the international geocaching website (geocaching.com).

Geocaching has in recent years rapidly increased its popularity as a hobby all over the world. In Finland, there are some 30,000 geocaches and a huge number of enthusiasts, who pursue geocaching actively. The Olkiluoto geocache was found by the first geocachers just a few hours after it was listed. An earthcache will also be hidden in Olkiluoto during the summer. It is placed in a location of great natural beauty by the sea, and you need to answer some quiz questions to log your find.

The Power from Nature observation trail opened last year also gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about the unique nature in Olkiluoto. The trail runs over a distance of ca. one kilometre in the area around the Visitor Centre, and there are info boards along the trail that provide information about e.g. birds and other wildlife on the Island.
