OL1 power limitation due to condenser repair work

14.4.2014

A minor leak of seawater into the condenser has been detected at the Olkiluoto 1 plant unit. The leak is currently being located.

The location where seawater leaks into the condenser is currently being searched at Olkiluoto 1. The minor leak of a few liters per hour was detected in reactor water conductivity tests. The leaking condenser unit has been isolated from the production process. The power output of the plant unit is limited to 300 MW during the locating and repair of the leak. Full power output is estimated to resume in the morning of Tuesday, April 15.

In the condenser, the steam that has been generated in the reactor and passed through the high and low pressure turbines turns back into water on the surface of seawater-cooled condenser pipes. The design of the condenser takes potential seawater leaks into consideration. Due to negative pressure, the direction of the leak is always towards the plant unit.

The repair work is estimated to take approximately eight hours. The work has no impact on nuclear safety.
