New operating license applied for Olkiluoto 1 and 2 plant units

26.1.2017

Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) has today filed with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment an application for the renewal of the operating license of the Olkiluoto 1 and 2 nuclear power plant units (OL1 and OL2). The renewal of the operating license is applied for from the Government until the end of 2038. The 20-year operating license in force at the moment must be renewed by the end of 2018.

The OL1 and OL2 plant units play a significant role in the production of base load electricity in Finland and for their part contribute to the execution of the national energy and climate strategy. The plant units have produced electricity for almost 40 years. Today the electricity produced by them accounts for about 17 percent of the electricity consumed in Finland and for about 22 percent of the electricity produced in Finland.

In connection with the application for the operating license, an extensive periodic safety review has been submitted to the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland (STUK) to make it possible for STUK to provide their own assessment of the safety of the operation at the plants. The periodic safety review is to be performed every ten years, and the last one was conducted in 2008. The next is scheduled for 2028. The safety documentation and procedures of the plant units are documents subject to continuous updating and approved by STUK.

The OL1 and OL2 plant units have over the years undergone several modifications that have improved their safety and capacity. Securing and enhancing safety continually are the basic principles in the operation of the plant units.
