New switchyard in Olkiluoto

3.8.2016

The Finnish national grid company Fingrid will renew the interconnection between the Olkiluoto nuclear power plants and the national grid. The switchyard built at the Olkiluoto substation in the 1970s will be replaced.

The Fingrid-owned substation in Olkiluoto connects the three Olkiluoto power plant units of TVO to the national grid. The new switchyard to be built at the Olkiluoto substation will take advantage of new technology. The duplex switchyard configuration based on double circuit breakers makes it possible to implement versatile connections in disruptions due to transients and maintenance actions.

-The renewal of the Olkiluoto switchyard is positive news as it will increase the operational security of the grid connections at the plant units, comments Mr. Sami Jakonen, Senior Vice President for Engineering at TVO.

The new switchyard in Olkiluoto is scheduled for completion in 2019.
