Best ever result in production history achieved in Olkiluoto

2.1.2014

TVO’s nuclear power plant in Olkiluoto achieved in 2013 the best ever production result in its history; 14.63 TWh (billion kilowatt-hours) of electricity. The combined load factor of the plant units was 95.1 percent.

The record-breaking production year 2013 was achieved despite a few unplanned outages. With 14.63 TWh, the total production of the plant units exceeds the previous record of 14.45 TWh from the year 2009 by almost 200 000 MWh, which equals approximately a five-day combined production volume of the two Olkiluoto plant units.

The 7.47 TWh production of Olkiluoto 1 in 2013 was the highest ever and only about 7,000 MWh less than the year 2012 record made at Olkiluoto 2. For Olkiluoto 2, the 7.16 TWh production in 2013 was the fifth best result in the history of the plant unit.

In terms of the load factor, Olkiluoto 1 achieved a factor of 97.1%, which is the fourth highest load factor ever for the plant unit (and for both plant units). As the load factor of Olkiluoto 2 was 93.1%, the combined load factor of the plant units was 95.1%.

- The production record is based on the upgrades carried out in 2010–2012; they are now beginning to be reflected in the production figures, concludes Mikko Kosonen, Senior Vice President, Production.

The upgrades have further improved the safety of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant and increased the net electric output of each plant unit by ca. 20 MW as a result of the increased efficiency of the turbine plants.
