Olkiluoto 3 safety automation systems arrived in Olkiluoto

1.2.2016

The safety instrumentation and control (I&C) systems of Teollisuuden Voima's (TVO) OL3 plant unit have been transferred from Erlangen, Germany to Olkiluoto. The complete process and safety I&C systems comprising 300 automation cabinets are now at the site.

- In the OL3 Project, there is a gradual transition from the installation works to testing going on. As the first milestone in 2016, testing of the process I&C was started in January. In April, commissioning of the process systems is planned to be commenced. At the same time, also the operating license application of the plant unit will be submitted to the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy, Jouni Silvennoinen, Senior Vice President responsible for the OL3 Project in TVO, explains.

I&C systems are used for the monitoring and control of the OL3 plant unit. There will be several separate and independent I&C systems at the OL3 plant unit, ensuring the safety of the plant in all conditions and circumstances.

Process automation systems are designed for normal operating conditions of the process, while safety automation systems control the safety functions in potential transient and accident conditions.
